LOTUS FLOWER

Lotus flower, also known as sacred lotus, Indian lotus or Nile rose, is the common name of an aquatic plant called Nelumbo nucifera, which is characterised by floating, fragrant leaves and a fruit with a complex structure with multiple holes resembling small eyes.

In Buddhism, the meaning of the lotus flower is purity of body and soul.

The lotus flower has the ability to survive in difficult environments, such as swampy areas, hence it is often associated with the complex life processes that humans must face.

The lotus flower is considered a sacred plant in China and India, which is why many meanings and symbolisms of the flower have been attributed to it.

Lotus flower in Buddhism

The meaning of the lotus flower in Buddhism is physical and spiritual purity. The muddy water that embraces the plant is associated with attachment and carnal desires, and the immaculate flower blooming in the water in search of light is the promise of purity and spiritual elevation.

Symbolically, the lotus flower is associated with the figure of the Buddha and his teachings, which is why it is a sacred plant for the people of the East. Legend has it that when the child Buddha took his first steps, lotus flowers grew everywhere he went.

In Hinduism, the significance of the lotus flower is associated with beauty, fertility, prosperity, spirituality, immaculate nature and eternity. The most common form of lotus seen in Hinduism is the white lotus flower or blue lotus flower.

Many of the gods and goddesses of Hinduism are linked to the flower: for example, the goddess of prosperity, Laxmi, is usually depicted sitting on a fully open lotus flower. Similarly, Brahma, the god of creation is depicted as emerging from a lotus.

Meaning of the lotus flower according to its colour:

• Blue lotus: refers to the triumph of the spirit over the senses, signifying wisdom and knowledge. This flower never reveals its interior, as it is almost always totally closed.
• White lotus: it is related to the perfection of the spirit and the mind, a state of total purity and immaculate nature. It is usually represented with 8 petals.
• Red lotus: reveals innocence and the original nature of the heart. This flower represents the qualities of the heart, such as love, passion and compassion. It is also known as the Buddha flower of Compassion.
• Pink Lotus: Although often confused with the white lotus flower, the pink lotus is the most important and special of all lotus flowers, and is related to divine personages, such as the Buddha himself.

Lotus flower oil

Lotus flower oil possesses myquelianin (Quercetin 3-O-glucuronide), a phenolic compound, has astringent, febrifuge, emollient, emmenagogue, expectorant, hypertensive, mucilaginous, cooling, resolving, sedative, stomachic, tonic, vasodilator properties. Lotus flower oil is extracted directly from natural products such as leaves, fruits, flowers or roots.

Moreover, lotus oil possesses therapeutic properties related to emotional and spiritual well-being, given its exquisite exotic and mystical aroma.

The lotus flower is often seen as a symbol of awakening. The reason is that while it grows in muddy pools of water, sometimes stagnant, it blooms every day in the sun.
